Duplicate Title

Please note: Kentucky is not a title-holding state. When a vehicle is transferred to a new owner, the title is mailed directly to the new owner within 2–6 weeks, regardless of whether there is a lien on the vehicle.

If the original Motor Vehicle or Boat Certificate of Title has been lost, stolen, or mutilated, you may apply for a duplicate title. Issuance of a duplicate title will void any previously issued Kentucky title.

Eligibility and Requirements:

  • The current owner of the vehicle must apply for the duplicate title.
  • If your name has changed since the title was issued, you must:
    • Complete the Title Application Form TC 96-182(PDF, 782KB)  using your current name
    • Provide a copy of the legal document supporting the name change (e.g., marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order), along with valid updated photo identification.
    • The new title will reflect your updated name.
  • If the owner is deceased:
    • Probate or trust documents, along with a death certificate, must be submitted to the Clerk’s Office at the time of application.
    • The petitioner, executor, administrator, or trustee must complete the application.
  • If applying under a Power of Attorney:
    • A copy of the signed Power of Attorney document must be submitted to the Clerk’s Office at the time of application.

How to obtain a Duplicate Title

  3. Visit one of the Jefferson County Clerk Branch Offices or mail the completed and notarized Motor Vehicle Application or Motor Boat Transaction Record along with $8.00 for each duplicate title requested to the Jefferson County Clerk.
