How to Renew Vehicle Registrations
Motor vehicle license plates are renewed during the primary vehicle owner’s birth month. Some specialty plates may have different renewal requirements.
To complete your renewal, your insurance coverage must be verified. If your provider has not electronically confirmed your coverage with the State of Kentucky, you may be required to present your current Insurance ID Card.
Personal Insurance Policies
For personal insurance policies only: If your insurance provider has not electronically confirmed current VIN coverage with the State of Kentucky, you must provide a current Insurance ID Card. The card must show an effective date within 45 days of the renewal transaction.
Alternatively, proof of coverage may be sent directly to our office by your insurance provider via email or fax.
Commercial Insurance Policies
Commercial insurance policies are often not electronically verified with the State of Kentucky; however, they are exempt from the 45-day insurance requirement.
Accepted forms of payment include cash, money order, personal check, and cashier’s check. We also accept MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover.
Note: A service fee applies to all card transactions—1.5% of the total for debit cards and 2.75% of the total for credit cards.
Registration Fees
The total cost of a registration renewal is the combined total of the Plate Registration Fee, which is determined by the type of plate, and the current year's Ad Valorem Tax for the vehicle, which is assessed by the Property Valuation Administration (PVA), which is based on the vehicle's value as of January 1st, every calendar year.
Ad Valorem Taxes
In Kentucky, the owner of a vehicle as of January 1 is responsible for that year’s Ad Valorem taxes. Please note that these taxes are not prorated.
For your convenience, these taxes are due either at the time of registration renewal or, if applicable, during a title transfer—whichever occurs first.
The Jefferson County Clerk’s Office is responsible only for the collection of Ad Valorem taxes. The assessment, adjustment, or exoneration of these taxes is handled by the Property Valuation Administration (PVA). Vehicle values are determined and entered into the system by the Jefferson County PVA using guidelines provided by the Kentucky Department of Revenue.
If you have questions regarding your vehicle’s assessment, please visit JeffersonPVA.ky.gov, call 502-574-6380, or email PVA@JeffersonPVA.ky.gov.
