The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels By Jordan Kelch Public Relations The honor of being named a Kentucky Colonel dates back to the beginning of the nineteenth century. In fact it was 1813 when the Commonwealths Militia successfully assisted in returning jurisdiction of the Northwest Territory to the United States. Upon this achievement Charles S. Todd an officer of the militia was invited to stay in the capitol by Governor Isaac Shelby. Todd was the first person to be honorarily granted the grade and rank of Kentucky Colonel. Of course in the beginning the title reflected actual military service. Throughout time though it has evolved to become a celebrated signal of fellowship family and faith. Being named a Kentucky Colonel is the highest honor bestowed by the Commonwealth given through the Office of the Secretary of State and the Governor. Its purpose is to identify and acknowledge those Kentuckians who exemplify greatness through significant achievements and noteworthy service to their community. While the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels revolves around recognition of service it has other functions that assist in growing and strengthening the state we call home. Why Are We so Angry at Work By Angela Davis Clark Human Resources Director Because of a recent workplace violence incident seen on live TV last week I ponder the question of why people seek vengeance and retaliation against current and former co-workers. I am not nave I recognize that there is a laundry list of reasons why employees may possibly be angry at work or even after they separate from a company. But I dont understand why that anger is so strong that they feel the need to act out. Some of the complaints that I personally hear about why employees are angry are as follows employees feel that they are not being paid enough employees dislike their co-workerssupervisor or feel that they are disliked by co-workers supervisor employees feel harassed or treated unfair employees feel like they are not being heard or taken seriously employees feel like they are treated like children employees perception that they could perform their supervisors job better than them employees feel like no one really cares about them at this agency employees feel like they are being disrespected employees feeling that they do more work than others in the department employees disliking the agency policies and procedures andor the employees feeling that HR never sides with them but always with management. I am sure that the list of complaints could go on-and-on but these are a few that come to mind. Anger is a reaction to a perceived threat to ourselves our loved ones our property our self-image or some part of our identity. Anger can manifest itself in three ways 1 Physically the physical changes in our body 2 Behaviorally the way we react to a situation andor 3 Cognitively the way we think about continued on page 6 5
